| A Greenhouse is an enclosed structure with walls and roofing usually made of polycarbonate plastic or glass panels and held together by a scaffolding of plastic, metal or wood. Its transparent or translucent feature enables it collect solar radiation from the sun which heats up its interior, making the inside temperature favorable to the growth of plants. This healthy microclimate is retained because the walls and roofing of the greenhouse is solid.
Greenhouses are basically designed to capture the sun but a number of integrated implements are also employed to further adjust the interior conditions depending on the needs of the plants. The glass or plastic panes may be fitted with roll-up shading screens and shelving units may be used to shade individual plants. Sunlight can be filtered by fixing varying layers of shade cloth on the shelves depending on a particular plant’s requirements. Greenhouses may also have heating, cooling, watering and lighting systems.
Greenhouses are used to protect plants from temperature extremes and from other weather conditions like extreme rain, unfavorable humidity or the presence of sand storms. It is also used to keep insect pests from harming the plants. Various plants, including flowers and other ornamental plants, fruits and vegetables, are grown in greenhouses. Many gardeners and farmers consider greenhouses as important gardening implements because they allow many types of plants to be grown year-round.
To get started on greenhouse gardening, your most important consideration would be the type of plants that you will be growing in it. If you plan to grow plants that are particularly sensitive or vulnerable to ambient environmental conditions, or if you live in a place usually subjected to weather extremes, then consider more advanced types of greenhouses that ensure the interior microclimate is maintained at its most ideal. You can consider buying a sufficiently insulated greenhouse with an elaborate system of lighting, irrigation, temperature and humidity controls that can be manipulated to adjust the conditions inside the greenhouse.
But if you are one of those people who would like to do greenhouse gardening just for a hobby, you are more likely not going to need the most elaborate of systems. Of course, the more rudimentary your greenhouse, the more you will need to personally monitor the condition of your greenhouse. Don’t worry about it though because this is where all the fun begins. Working hard on one’s plants and seeing them grow healthy and vibrant is the most satisfying thing any gardener can ever experience.
